A new podcast explores dark history of fascism in the United States
“Star-Spangled Fascism Podcast” examines 20th century American authoritarian movements
Washington, D.C., February 6, 2024: A dramatic new podcast series exploring the dark history of American support for fascism and Nazism launches Feb. 20, 2024, its creators announced today.
The “Star-Spangled Fascism Podcast” debuts with an interview with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, author of the New York Times best-selling book Prequel – An American Fight Against Fascism.
The podcast is hosted by historian and media personality Bradley W. Hart, author of the award-winning Hitler’s American Friends: The Third Reich’s Supporters in the United States.
The book was on Time Magazine’s list of “13 New Books Everyone Will Be Talking About This Fall” (2018). Hart was also prominently featured in Ms. Maddow’s recent podcast ULTRA.
Each episode of Star-Spangled Fascism features Hart interviewing one or more experts on fascist influencers and the Americans that resisted these anti-democratic upstarts across the past century.
“It’s exciting to be able to share my research and showcase the work of other scholars in such an accessible way. From my experience, most Americans today think that fascism was something confined to other countries. They don’t realize that there were people who were arguing for fascism at home too.”
– Bradley W. Hart
Season 1 examines extremists who advocated for an American version of the Third Reich including pro-Nazi groups like the German American Bund and Silver Legion that had tens of thousands of Americans supporting these fascist movements all over the country.
It also profiles influential Americans who were sympathetic to Nazism, including the industrialist car manufacturer Henry Ford and the famed radio host Father Charles Coughlin. Together, these groups and individuals reached and influenced millions of Americans.
“This is a disturbing part of history that Americans need to know.”
– Bradley W. Hart
